COMBINED COOLING HEAT & POWER PLANT
Wexford, PAWinner of the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania Commercial Award for 2021.
The Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital (AHN) Combined Cooling Heat & Power System (CCHP) is a state-of-the art microgrid for a state-of-the art hospital. The LLI Engineering designed system produces reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy to keep the lights on and provide a comfortable environment for patients and staff year-round.
Fueled by Peoples Natural Gas and assembled by the master builders at PJ Dick Construction, the CCHP system provides up to 2 megawatts (2 MW) of electricity plus hot water, chilled water and steam to meet the needs of the hospital. Energy not being used by the hospital can be sold back to the grid.
“Being able to produce excess generation of energy that you can sell back to the grid is interesting and provides opportunities as well.” - Dr. Allan Klapper, President of AHN Wexford Hospital.

pittsburgh INTERNATIONAL airport microgrid
Winner of the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania Innovation Award for 2021.
The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) Microgrid merges the reliability of natural gas with the sustainability of solar energy to create a powerful, yet efficient power solution. Owned and operated by Peoples Natural Gas, the LLI Engineering designed system produces up to 20 Megawatts (MW) of power. At the time of construction by PJ Dick, PIT consumed 14 MW at peak. Excess power produced by the microgrid can then be sold back to market for a profit.

the nature inn at bald eagle STATE PARK
Awarded LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and named on the “Best Eco-Friendly Hotel” list by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice for 2021.
Located in Howard, Pennsylvania, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Park merges modern design and nature like no other. Working with Civil and Environmental Consultants, Inc. and SMP Architects, LLI Engineering provided HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, fire detection design, exterior building and site lighting, and implemented the LEED Certification process. The facility has geo-thermal heating and cooling, and a vast rainwater collection system used for all non-potable applications.
“The green design is groundbreaking,” Michelle Smithbauer, the park’s environmental education specialist, told The Burg. “It makes people feel better when they’re staying in a state park. It’s a less impactful way of staying in a hotel.”

expedient data center
CLEVELAND, OH
LLI Engineering designed a 7,200 sq. ft. data center with NOC and UPS support space for 243 server racks. The data center area included a 24" raised floor to route power and provided the required air conditioning.
Power for the data center required two separate 3000 amp utility company power feeds to two separate switchgears (A & B). The commercial power is backed up by two 750 kw standby generators. There are four UPS systems (two for the A buss and two for the B buss) which feed a total of sixteen power distribution units (PDU's).
To cool the data center a total of 8 computer room air conditioning units (CRAC) were installed around the perimeter of the room. Each CRAC is a nominal 30-ton unit and distributed conditioned air below the raised floor. The units are set up in an N & 1 configuration where 7 operate and 1 is standby. The UPS battery room is cooled by three CRAC units in an N + 1 configuration. These units are connected by common supply air ductwork and isolation dampers.
The entire facility is protected by a fire protection system above and below raised floor consisting of piping discharge nozzles and FE-25 cylinders.
